Since its formation in 1977, the String Trio
of New York has been delighting and riveting audiences around the
world with its startling acoustic improvisations and compositions for
violin, guitar and bass. Initially conceived as a composers' collective,
the String Trio of New York has grown in scope and now features a repertoire
of over sixty stylistically diverse works made up of originals by the
members, works commissioned from posers such as Muhal Richard Abrams, Julia Wolfe, Mark Helias, Bobby Previte, Marty
Ehrlich, Joe Lovano, and Anthony Davis, and arrangements
of classics by Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Charlie
Parker, Bud Powell, Wayne Shorter and others.
Now in its 30th season, the String Trio of New York is one of the most active touring ensembles of its kind and has performed hundreds of concerts throughout the world. Their international jazz festival appearances include Paris, Berlin, Vancouver, Toronto, Zurich, and Warsaw.
In the US, the trio has been heard at the Mellon and Newport Jazz Festivals as well as the Walker Arts Center, the Smithsonian Institution, Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Houston's Da Camera Society, Spivey Hall in Atlanta, Hult Center in Oregon, the University Musical Society in Ann Arbor, San Francisco's Herbst Theatre, and the Ravinia Festival, among others. The ensemble has been featured on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition and Public Radio International's Concerts from the Library of Congress.
The String Trio of New York has released sixteen
critically acclaimed recordings on the
Black Saint, Arabesque, Stash, Westwind, Accord
Accort, Music and Arts,
OmniTone, and Barking Hoop labels.
Collaborative recordings have included one with guest pianist Anthony Davis for Music and Arts featuring the Davis work "Happy Valley Blues" and the works of

Thoroughly committed to education, the trio has developed a unique residency connecting jazz to the sciences and humanities, ever widening their circle of devoted fans.
“...no individual or ensemble
has done more to demystify chamber jazz, and to realize its potential
for warmth, sensuousness and beauty ... than the String Trio of
New York."
